African and Caribbean Mental Health Services
The African and Caribbean Mental Health Services (ACMHS) was established in October 1989 and is a charitable voluntary organisation providing support predominantly to African and African Caribbean people as well as other minority groups including White Europeans.
ACMHS services
• Talking Therapies –CBT based therapy provided by Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners and a CBT Counsellor for individuals with a Manchester GP. The team deliver a range of psychosocial interventions to clients experiencing common mental health problems (mild to moderate mental health) i.e.: depression anxiety, relationship problems, low self esteem.

• Mental Health care – for African and African Caribbean individuals with severe and enduring mental health (schizophrenia, bipolar disorder)

• Carers Helpline Counsellor – available Tuesdays and Thursdays between 10-2pm (not exclusive to carers)
• Person Centred Counselling
Are you in a stressful situation? Are you finding it difficult to resolve?
By talking to a counsellor, you can look at problem areas in your life and find ways of dealing with them in a safe and confidential setting. Person centred counselling can be used for a range of issues, such as:
Anxiety, stress, depression
Bereavement
Low self-esteem
Relationship problems
Work related issues
• Cultural Wellbeing Programme – delivering culturally appropriate mental health interventions for South Asian, Black African and Caribbean communities living in Manchester and Trafford who are experiencing severe mental illness in partnership with BHA, Empower Consultants and Fikawelie

Medication management
• Carers support – In partnership with African Caribbean Care Group and Carers Manchester to improve services for Manchester’s unwaged carers. Support offered includes:

• Drop-ins – Social activities to enable service users to reduce isolation, meet new friends and learn new experiences
• Women’s group – weekly discussion group that meets every Tuesday from 1-3pm providing a confidential space to share experiences. Activities include:

• Student Placement – we provide placements and training for students i.e.: social work, counsellors, medical, nurses and short term secondments for health and social care professionals. Please contact for further information and/or costings
• Volunteering opportunities – to assist in the drop-ins or to become a Trustee
