Hate crime has no place in Manchester. Everyone has the right to feel safe and we all have a responsibility to stand against hatred and discrimination. This has always been important and even more so following the attack on the MEN Arena.
Manchester Community Safety Partnership has funding available to tackle hate crime. This funding has been running for several years and paid for some fantastic events and projects. This is the first year that Macc will be involved in the administration of the programme.
This round of funding is specifically for groups and organisations to hold an event during Hate Crime Awareness week 2018 (5-11th February 2018).
Hate crime is heavily under-reported. More work needs to be done to highlight where and how reports can be made, to support victims to feel more confident to report hate crime incidents and to challenge hate crime in our communities.
The aim of the funding is:
To raise awareness of what hate crime is, To increase reporting and To celebrate diversity in your communities.
To help give you an idea, the types of groups or project who have previously applied include:
- Community days
- Football groups
- Late night safety support group
- LGBT group
- Community forum
- Multi faith group
- Women’s drop support group refugee support group
- University student safety project
A hate crime is an act of violence or hostility based on who you are or what someone thinks you are. The application form will ask for information about which areas of hate crime your event is focused on and how it will make an impact in this area of hate crime. There are six recognised area of hate crimes, which are listed below.
- Disability
- Race
- Religion or belief
- Sexual orientation
- Trans
- Alternative subculture
If your event includes a focus on another area of discrimination, please do not let this stop you from applying as we would still like to hear from you and know about your event as this maybe something we can fund.
We want to know how your event will benefit the local community, how many people may attend the number of volunteers and if this is one off event or part of larger programme of work or annual/ regular events.
The event must take place in the City of Manchester.
To be eligible to apply
The funding programme is open to groups and organisations which meet all of the following criteria:
The group or organisation is based in and of benefit to people living in the City of Manchester
The group or organisation has a bank account in the name of your group/ organisation
The event/ project is to be held in the city of Manchester during Hate Crime Awareness week ( 5-11th February)
The group agrees to complete and return the Grant Monitoring Form
If your event is working with children or vulnerable adults, you will also be asked to provide your safeguarding policy
What we cannot fund
This funding cannot award funding to any political organisations or groups and cannot pay for speakers from within your organisations.
Funding
There is up to £400 available to apply for per organisation or group.
If you have previously been awarded funding to hold an event during hate crime week 2018 from this funding programme, unfortunately you cannot be awarded any additional funding.
However, if you have applied previously to this programme and were unsuccessful, you are welcome to apply again. Also, if you were successful in receiving funding for an event held during July-December 2017, you are welcome to apply for this second round of funding.
How to apply
The deadline for applications is 12 noon on Friday 24 November 2017. Successful applicants will be notified by 18 December 2018

If successful funding will be paid in one tranche of money
Please note that all application will be sent to a council email address then the applications will be transferred to Macc to be processed.
All applications will receive an acknowledgment email. If you do not receive this email, your application has not been received and will not be assessed for funding.
Support events
Macc will be hosting several events during the application process to answer any questions or queries about the funding to help applicants. The support events for this funding round will be held on;
- Thursday 16th November 10am-12noon at the Wythenshawe Forum, Simonsway, Wythenshawe. M22 5RX
- Tuesday 21st November 10am-12noon at The Factory Youth Zone, 931 Rochdale Road. M9 8AE
These drop in support events are for any groups or projects who are interested in applying to this funding programme. There is no need to book so feel free to come along and find out more aboiut the funding, if you are able to apply or if you have any questions about the application process. Unfortunately we will not abe able to read through any applications at these sessions but we can asnswer any questions and offer general guidance.
How will decisions be made
Decisions will be made by a panel of representatives from Manchester City Council, the police and the voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) sector. The panel will assess all applicants who meet the conditions of funding. Following assessment of applications, all successful applicants will be sent a grant offer letter, with a grant acceptance form and a grant monitoring form to be completed after your event and sent back to us.
Monitoring and evaluation
All successful applicants will be required to complete a grant monitoring form as a condition of receiving the funding which must be filled in within 6 weeks following your event. Organisations that fail to fill in the monitoring form may put further funding application in jeopardy. The grant monitoring form is a short form to update us on what you did as part of your event and what the outcome was. If you would like to send us photos, feedback from attendees, videos, newspaper clippings, we would be happy to receive these. We will use these to help promote the funding grants for the following year and illustrate the good work in Manchester to tackle hate crime.

Third party reporting centres
There are many ways to report hate crime in Manchester. You may be aware of the main ways to report which are to the police over the phone by dialling 999 in an emergency or 101 in a non-emergency or directly attending a police station. However, there are many other places to report if you do not feel comfortable speaking directly to the police. These are called third party reporting centres and Manchester currently has 36 third party reporting centres.
