Heads Up and mental health courses at Back on Track and MAES

3 Mar 2017 - 10:31 by michelle.foster

Heads Up
The Heads Up courses delivered at Back on Track and four different MAES venues throughout 2017 are aimed at addressing some of the symptoms of mild/moderate mental health problems, such as low mood, anxiety, stress, lack of motivation or confidence. The courses will help individuals develop strategies for understanding and managing their symptoms through different learning activities. They will also be encouraged to access other courses at MAES and Back on Track, as meaningful use of time can really help when people are feeling low. Back on Track

The Heads Up courses follow the Five Ways to Wellbeing Pathway, which are proven pathways to improving mental health. Each session will explore one pathway through different activities such as art, IT, drama, communication or music. These activities can be used as self-management techniques outside of the classroom. These courses are for anyone who is currently experiencing mild-moderate mental health problems. A specific diagnosis is not required to be able to access these courses. It is for people who may be feeling low, stressed, anxious or worried, who may have gone through a difficult life change and be finding it hard to cope.

Everyone interested in attending these courses will have a 1:1 informal interview before the course starts, where they will be supported to complete a wellbeing and mental health questionnaire.

Heads Up is part of a national research project funded by the Department for Education. This research project is examining the premise that adult education courses can help improve the symptoms of mild to moderate mental health problems and the impact of these courses will be measured throughout the programme.

Mental health courses
There are many different courses and activities on offer at MAES and Back on Track, so even if an individual is not eligible for Heads Up (due to their symptoms being too mild or too severe), they will be invited to access other courses at Back on Track and MAES. Service users also have access to guidance and support throughout their journey.

Referrals are welcomed from staff, for both of these mental health related courses or for general courses. You can refer clients by ringing the centre on 0161 834 1661 to make an appointment for an interview at Back on Track or a MAES venue. Individuals can self-refer too.
