Transmitting culture and community cohesion - Radio Sheung Lok Spirit Story

25 Sep 2017 - 11:31 by helen.walker

'We learn, support and respect each other and send our kindness to the air, finding the hard to reach.'

Friday’s show celebrated the Radio Sheung Lok project itself. Participants discussed their friendships and team work as well as Radio Sheung Lok’s upcoming participation in the Manchester Science Festival and their nomination in the 2017 Community Radio Awards.

Radio Sheung Lok aims to help Manchester’s English and Cantonese-speaking Chinese community to overcome barriers, particularly in regard to promoting good mental health. The grant that enabled this eight-month project has been training over 15 adults with mental health problems in the Chinese community to make their own radio shows. Programme content is in English and Cantonese, culturally appropriate and well-promoted locally. Shows include nostalgic music, local and national news, signposting and discussion about better mental health, increasing physical activity and stigma reduction.

“For me it’s about peer support and learning language. I’ve heard our listeners say the programme makes them feel happy and connected” said Denise Yuen Megson, Radio Sheung Lok trainee and volunteer.

The Radio Sheung Lok project is a partnership between Wai Yin and ALL FM 96.9 and has broadcast from 1pm-2pm every Friday since 28 April. Since then, the project has had 1,000 hits and 1,900 listened to minutes in Manchester, Hong Kong and China! Also, they have been nominated for the Community Radio Award and won the Bronze award for Community Development Project of the Year 2017 on Saturday.
