Lydia first saw the advert about becoming a Cyril Flint Befriender over three years ago. When she first met Maureen, who had just come out of hospital, she was very down and depressed. Maureen was so isolated, she had almost forgotten how to speak, was hunched and closed, and told Lydia that she was basically just waiting to die. Lydia continued to visit Maureen every week and since then, she has seen her blossom and "come alive again".
All Older People
Today, the North City Nomads group took 240 elderly people in five coaches on a day out to Lytham St Annes. It was organised by 15 volunteers and everyone had the option of activities such as shopping and walking along the promenade. By giving the people of North Manchester the opportunity to go out and make new friends, it encourages the reduction of social isolation and encourages new and wider friendship groups.
“I know it’s Tuesday because I am going out to lunch and I don’t normally go out”. Every week for the past year, older people in Wythenshawe have had the opportunity to meet up for lunch at the Northenden Social Club. Apart from sharing a meal together, the lunch helps everyone to socialise and meet others in a community space.
