Child Action North West are seeking to recruit Appropriate Adults to their service. Manchester City Council have recently commissioned them to provide attendance to vulnerable children and adults who are in custody.

What is an Appropriate Adult?
They are individuals who oversee the welfare of a young person (10-16 years) whilst that young person is detained and questioned at the Police Station.

Why is it necessary to have Appropriate Adults at police Stations during detention and questioning of young people?

The PACE Codes of Practice inform the police of the particular care they should take when interviewing a Young Person.

The appropriate adult Roles and Responsibilities:
• To attend at Police Stations in the interest of young people aged 10-17 years who are being detained by the police or Vulnerable Adults
• To check on the detained person’s welfare and rights
• To help the detained person understand the police process and the reason for detention
• To attend the police interview and to intercede if it is not carried out fairly and properly according to the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984
• To facilitate communication between the detained person and the police
• To maintain confidentiality
• To maintain a non-judgmental approach and follow anti-discriminatory practices
• To maintain written records and ensure the completion of AA outcome form
• To inform the Youth Offending Team/EDT if a PACE bed is required
• To regularly attend support group meetings and supervision
