Democracy Days 2010

15 Jul 2010 - 12:24 by mike.wright

Has democracy worked for you?

Following the elections in May, do you think you will have the local and national government you want or the one you deserve?
Do you think the voice of local communities will have more influence or less?

Voting isn’t the only way that voices are heard and politicians aren’t the only people that need to listen.
In response to this, NAVCA, as a partner in the Take Part programme and working with local organisations has put together events called Democracy Days. Democracy Days will bring together people in an area to learn how to have a greater influence in local decisions, policies and strategies.

The events are aimed at voluntary organisations and community groups as well as individuals and staff in public bodies who are interested in the views and expertise that local people can bring. The events are also aimed at anyone wanting to learn more about active citizenship and the democratic process and who might be considering teaching others in their community.

The events have been designed to bring national know-how together with local expertise and include briefings on how our parliamentary and voting systems work, how regional and local government structures make decisions and how individuals and organisations can be heard. Workshops and discussions are used to identify local issues, share inside knowledge, tips and strategies and to develop action plans and ideas to take away.
The events are also designed to help participants take active citizenship to the next level and will link with opportunities for further learning and development, including opportunities to become a trainer, activist or organiser for active citizenship in the national Take Part Trainers programme.

Supported by the WEA Train the Take Part Trainers project, these events are fully funded and are free to attend. In addition, if participants need help with travel, childcare or other costs in order to attend the day, financial support is available.
