FareShare FoodCloud: a new initiative for fighting hunger and tackling food waste in Greater Manchester

5 Feb 2016 - 09:59 by michelle.foster

FareShare FoodCloud is a new scheme which helps charities and community groups like you to access the free, unsold, surplus food from a day’s sales at your local Tesco supermarket. Using the simple mobile technology FoodCloud, FareShare have already helped 60 UK charity groups to access over 20 tonnes of fresh, good quality, free food.

From 22 February 2016, FareShare FoodCloud will enable not-for-profit organisations based in Greater Manchester to pair up with local Tesco stores, gaining access to their unsold and perfectly edible surplus food. Each week, signed up charities will receive a text from their local Tesco store on a preferred day, notifying them of the free surplus food available and the time that these donated items can be collected (8.30pm-9.30pm).

FareShare are currently looking for charities and community groups that could benefit from these ambient food donations (typically bakery goods, fruit and veg), through reducing the costs of providing food for their vulnerable clients.
