Free community education workshops

British Red Cross are delivering free workshops for community groups. The free educational sessions will help you learn practical skills and ways to cope in emergencies, connect with others and trainingbuild your confidence. The workshops are available online, by telephone, and in face-to-face sessions.

Adult first aid (over 19 years)
Time length: 60 minutes
Group size: 5 to 15
Delivery: Online (individual and group), face-to-face (eligible groups only)

Description: Are you interested in learning essential, lifesaving first aid skills to help in an emergency? If so, our first aid workshop might be for you. These are interactive workshops, run by experienced British Red Cross educators, that build your confidence to help someone in a first aid emergency, using everyday objects around you.

As a result of this workshop you will learn to:

  • Perform essential first aid skills
  • Build confidence and willingness to help in a first aid emergency
  • Assess and manage risks to make informed choices when helping others
  • Build confidence and willingness to help in a first aid emergency using the objects around you

Adult tackling loneliness (over 19 years)
Time length: 60 minutes
Group size: 5 to 15
Delivery: Online (individual and group), face-to-face (eligible groups only)

Description: Feeling lonely and isolated can make life challenging, especially during a crisis. It can be difficult to know how to help. This workshop aims to give you the opportunity to speak openly about how it might feel to be lonely or isolated and learn skills to help others who may be suffering. Using group discussion to address the complex causes and effects of loneliness, there will be a chance to reflect and share personal experiences too. The workshop will also discuss and practise how to be an effective listener in order to support others.  

As a result of this workshop you will learn to:

  • Feel more comfortable talking about loneliness
  • Recognise when someone needs support
  • Feel confident to offer support to someone who feels lonely

Adult adapt and recover from adversity (over 19 years)
Time length: 60 minutes
Group size: 5 to 15
Delivery: Online and telephone (individual and group), face-to-face (eligible groups only)

Description: This workshop will explore tools and strategies to build resilience. You will learn to help yourself and others adapt and recover from challenges by identifying practical and emotional skills that help when faced with a crisis. The workshop will be based around interactive activities and group discussion, with chances to reflect and share personal experiences.

As a result of this workshop you will learn to:

  • Improve your ability to cope with change and transition during times of adversity
  • Acknowledge and appreciate your own and others’ experiences during challenging times
  • Feel confident to move forward positively

Youth First Aid (10-19 years)

Time length: 60 minutes
Group size: 5 to 35 participants

Description: A workshop where students will learn essential first aid skills. We will help them to build the confidence and willingness to help someone in an emergency, using everyday objects that they have around them. We also show them where to get support if they have an injury or illness, as well as introducing them to the work that we do in the UK.

Children/young people will learn to:

  • Be more confident to help someone in a first aid emergency
  • Be more willing to help someone in a first aid emergency
  • Be more able to help someone in a first aid emergency

Youth Coping With Challenges (10-19 years)
Delivery: Online, face-to-face (eligible groups only)
Time length: 60 minutes
Group size: 5 to 35

Description: Young people face a variety of complex challenges in their lives. This workshop aims to provide them with a resilience- building framework to help them cope better with the challenges they face. The workshop uses experiential learning to encourage learners to take part in group tasks and activities. This is followed by guided periods of discussion and reflection to help consolidate learning.

Children/young people will learn to:

  • Explain how people can cope with challenges using the four pillars of resilience
  • Understand the relationship between connections with others and resilience
  • Feel confident to apply what they have learnt to better cope with challenge

Youth Empathy and Migration (10-19 years)
Delivery: Online
Time length: 60 minutes
Group size: 5 to 35

Description: An online workshop to learn more about the people in the community. The workshop will look at the different reasons people leave home and help students to develop empathy for migrants' motives for moving. They will also learn more about the obstacles migrants face in their new homes. By using and exploring people’s stories and experiences, we can help students challenge assumptions about migrants, asylum seekers and refugees – as well as to improve their understanding of their community and build mutual respect.

Children/young people will learn to:

  • Develop knowledge and explore their assumptions surrounding refugees, asylum seekers and migration
  • Think about the different reasons why people leave home recognise connections between migrants and yourselves
  • Empathise with their experiences and share them with others
