A Fruit and Veg Community - Healthy Me Healthy Communities Story

21 Sep 2017 - 15:15 by Nigel Rose

At the Anson Community-Shop you can buy a basket of groceries worth £12 for only £2.50. It’s at the heart of the Anson Estate and helps families that struggle to pay bills and put food on the table. Cereals, frozen and chilled items, tinned goods and more are supplied by Fareshare, Tesco, M&S and other local suppliers from in-date stock that would otherwise go to waste.

What’s more, local customers can get their fresh fruit and veg for free.

I don’t know what we’d do without it. Since the shop opened last year it’s made such a difference. It’s helping so many families get by and helping the community come together. It’s so friendly”, said Susan, a resident and regular shop user.

The shop opens for eight hours over two days each week and is run between nine volunteers with the support of One Manchester and Healthy Me Healthy Communities. Sammy is one of the volunteers, a local resident and long-term carer for her partner. Sammy says, “We’ve got about 185 members and at least 60 people that come and shop every week. We see lots of regular faces including people that otherwise don’t really come out of their homes. We help families to put food on the table and help to get more fruit and veg in their diet. I want to see the shop go from strength to strength.”
