Macmillan – National engagement opportunity – Social care

9 Jan 2020 - 14:59 by michelle.foster

Macmillan Cancer SupportMacmillan would like to work with people living with cancer to influence policy makers and commissioners to understand that people living with cancer have significant social care needs that are not being met.

Some examples might be:

  • Someone who suffers from fatigue after treatment and struggles to cook and clean for themselves
  • Someone who lives rurally and who might struggle to get carers to come to them
  • Someone who finds it hard to leave the house and get to shops or activities they had previously enjoyed
  • Someone who is a carer for a loved one and finds it hard to leave their loved one to get to treatment

Macmillan would like to hear from you if you have had cancer, or have supported someone with cancer, and have experience or what it is like to have physical support needs that are not being met.

If you would like to use your experience to help Macmillan influence change, contact Sarah Gregory, Macmillan Senior Policy Advisor (Social Care and Carers) at: [email protected]

What will this involve?
Sarah would like to arrange interviews with people who are interested, either on the phone, or face-to-face, depending on location, starting as soon as possible and continuing into the new year. The experiences Sarah hears about will help form a report which Macmillan will use to help influence policy makers and those who make decisions about how social care is provided.

The activity is UK-wide; although healthcare is devolved in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, it is important for Macmillan to understand the needs of everyone living with cancer to help influence change where you live.
