Student Placement Opportunity

27 Feb 2015 - 09:51 by michelle.foster

As part of the University’s Q-Step programme, they are looking to offer placements for social sciences students in VCS organisations and think tanks. The placements must be about data analysis: the aim of the programme is to enable students to gain experience of data analysis, with a focus on quantitative data and skills in social research.

Placements are 6-8 weeks long – mostly in July and August. Students will be paid by the programme at Living Wage rate.

Projects need to be realistically delivered over the space of 8 weeks. This may be an opportunity to work on one of those “if only we had time” research projects.

Here are some examples of the sorts of things which you could offer:
• Analysing survey results – e.g. feedback from users and stakeholders – could also involve setting up surveys but students will have limited knowledge of survey design
• Conducting research using public datasets – e.g. looking at local health statistics and producing a report for you to use in planning / campaigning
• Data collection and cleansing – e.g. updating your organisation’s database though they will not necessarily have specific database skills
• Production of Open Datasets – e.g. gathering data which your organisation can release as open data

Organisations need to have someone who can plan and supervise the work – so this isn’t an opportunity to bring in an expert – you will need to have some experience of doing this kind of analysis work in your organisation but it will be an extra pair of hands for a while and provide a student with a great opportunity to learn about how data are applied in a socially useful context.

The deadline for proposals is: Friday 27 March 2015
