Young Carers Strategy 2017/19

14 Jul 2017 - 10:57 by michelle.foster

Manchester City Council have recently launched their Young Carers Strategy setting out how they intend to work with and support young carers as well as the resources that are available to them. Manchester City Council

Definition of a young carer:
‘A person under 18 who provides, or intends to provide, care for another person (of any age), except where that care is provided for payment pursuant to a contract of voluntary work.’ The Children and Families Act 2014

In Manchester the definition has been extended to:
‘a person under 18 who provides, or intends to provide, care for another person (of any age), except where that care is provided for payment pursuant to a contract of voluntary work.’

‘This relates to care or additional duties related to having a family member who has a physical disability, mental health need or learning disability, or who is affected by drug, alcohol or substance misuse.’

Currently over 1,000 young carers have been identified in the city although this is thought to be a low figure as this kind of activity often remains hidden. If you identify someone who is a young carer this must be reported to the Early Help Hubs.
