GM Poverty Action Newsletter: Re-thinking Poverty Review and Report; Allotment growers; Wood Street; Booth Centre; Universal Credit, GM Living Wage

In Greater Manchester Poverty Action’s (GMPA) newsletter they have included the personal reflections on their Re-thinking Poverty event by GMPA’s Tom Skinner as well as a report on the proceedings. A local keen allotment grower shares her thoughts on donating excess fresh produce to charities that help the homeless and those in food poverty. GMPA introduce a new charity called Sponsorstars and provide details about Wood Street Missions Christmas appeal for children’s presents.

JRF UK Poverty 2017 report shows sharp increase in child and pensioner poverty

UK Poverty 2017, a new report from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, has found that almost 400,000 more children and 300,000 more pensioners are now living in poverty than in 2012/13. Since that year, there have been continued increases in poverty, across both age groups. Very little progress has been made in reducing poverty among working-age adults.

Trapped Campaign – The criminal exploitation of children and adults

Police, local authorities, Greater Manchester Combined Authority, young people and an MP have launched a campaign to stop criminal gangs from grooming children and vulnerable adults to commit crime.

The campaign, known as ‘Trapped’, aims to raise awareness of criminals who are grooming and exploiting children and young adults to commit crime on their behalf.
Offenders take victims from urban areas to the countryside or coastal areas to sell drugs. Sometimes victims are trafficked closer to home, and are moved around Greater Manchester.

Home Office consultation on the criteria for designating bodies in the police super-complaints system

The Policing and Crime Act 2017 includes provisions for the introduction of a new policing super-complaints system. The Home Office knows that systems have, in the past, sometimes been too slow in capturing major issues, such as widespread child sexual abuse or the misuse of stop and search. Complementing wider reforms to the individual complaints system, the Government committed to bring in a ground-breaking system of police super-complaints. Home Office

Campaign Against Charging Charities

In recent years the Charity Commission has seen its budget slashed from £40m to around £21m – and further cuts could well be on the horizon. As a result, there is a debate about charging charities to plug the gap – which DSC opposes. Directory of Social Change

Greater Manchester builds on today’s hard work to launch a Sustainable Food Vision for the future. A vision for a sustainable food future

Despite a night of atrocious weather, forty representatives from Greater Manchester food organisations made it to Bridge 5 Mill in East Manchester to enjoy the gorgeous ‘Unlikely Heroes’ farmer photo exhibition and launch the Sustainable Food Vision for Greater Manchester.
