Description of opportunity:

 

A group of volunteers called Friends of Fallowfield have come together to save Fallowfield Library from closing. City South Housing has offered Friends of Fallowfield support in order to transform the library into a community asset and a sustainable enterprise going forward. For volunteers this is an exciting time to get involved and be part of something new, which will become a vital community asset within Fallowfield. Main purpose – To help children and young people with their homework and support them in their learning Supporting and helping children and young people with their homework by:

  • Offering one to one help in finding and using information
  • both online and book resources
  • Supporting young people to improve their literacy and numeracy skills
  • Helping to make their learning exciting, relevant and fun
  • Supporting young people in the use of ICT and educational web resources
  •  Listening to children read and playing educational games

  • Further ad hoc training will be available that you could take advantage – to be discussed with the volunteer Coordinator.

Commitment Volunteers would be asked to support drop in sessions either during the late afternoon / early evening sessions and/or on Saturdays (depending on the sessions on offer) At this stage we are looking to run sessions mid week 3:30pm - 6pm (Tuesday and another day) and Saturdays 1pm - 4pm. Volunteers would only be expected to make one session per week.

Skills / Qualifications:

This opportunity would suit someone who:
• Enjoys being with young people
• Has a confident, outgoing personality
• Confidence in using a range of ICT applications and the internet would be beneficial
• Has good communication and literacy skills
• Some knowledge of the school system would be beneficial
• Volunteer information – adult opportunity - Homework
• Is willing to undergo a CRB check, undertaken by City South (at no cost to you)
