'History of 1945' talk tomorrow

Tomorrow, Wednesday 22 July at 2pm there will be a talk at the Library by Keith Flett, 'A history of 1945: beyond Ken Loach'.  Keith is a socialist historian and a prolific letter writer in the British press.

Admission free; light refreshments afterwards.

This talk is part of a series running alongside the Library exhibition Spirit of `45: from warfare to welfare. The re-arranged talk about the 1945 welfare reforms by Pat Thane takes place on Wednesday 16 September at 2pm.

The exhibition is open Wednesdays to Fridays 1-5pm (and the first Saturday of the month 10am-4pm) until 25 September.

1835 election expenses display ends soon

If you haven't yet seen our exhibition of a new acquisition, you only have until Wednesday 29 July to drop in to see it. Thanks to money from the Heritage Lottery Fund's Collecting Cultures programme the Library is now the owner of a rare and most unusual archive of election material - from 1835. It details the expenses of a Lincolnshire Tory candidate, Thomas George Corbett, including amounts spent on alcohol, tobacco, and wagons to get his voters to the hustings.  More information here.

Our blog is highlighting other items the Library is starting to acquire as part of this Voting for Change project.
Yesterday we looked into the history of this caricature of George Odger, labour leader and shoemaker; a couple of weeks ago we investigated the story of the Birmingham Political Union and its role in agitating for parliamentary reform in the 1830s, as reflected in three reports we recently purchased.  If you would like to find out more about participating in this project, email enquiries@wcml.org.uk.

Peterloo picnic - 196th anniversary commemoration

On Sunday 16 August from 1 to 3pm the Peterloo Memorial Campaign group are organising an event in the open space in front of Manchester Central Conference Centre, to mark the anniversary of the Peterloo Massacre.

There will be banners, marchers arriving, and the reading of the names of those who died, as before. This year the organisers are also calling on people to bring a simple meal of bread and cheese, to participate in The Peterloo Picnic, 'thereby completing what the protesters originally set out to do'. There will be a giant spiderweb map, with picnic blankets marking each of the towns that sent marchers to St Peter's Fields.

More information here.

Peterloo witness workshop

On Saturday 22 August from 12 to 4pm at the People's History Museum in Manchester historian Robert Poole will be leading a hands-on workshop on the Peterloo Massacre.  Robert will give a lecture, 'Eye-witnesses to Peterloo', there will be a guided tour of Peterloo artefacts, and then there will be a workshop where participants can find out about and help transcribe newly-discovered eye-witness accounts of the massacre.

The event is free but tickets should be booked in advance here.
