5 May 2017 - 11:27 by michelle.foster

Manchester-based mental health charity, Self Help are hoping to make history as they attempt to beat the world record for the most people practicing mindfulness together. Self Help

The event will take place on Saturday 13 May, 11am, at Whitworth Art Gallery, to celebrate Mental Health Awareness Week and raise awareness of the stress-reducing practice.

Many people across the world are using mindfulness to cope with the pressures of life – and this event will offer Manchester residents the opportunity to get a flavour of what’s involved.

Mindfulness is a form of meditation about being in the present, which uses calming techniques. The practice is recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) as a way to prevent depression in people who have had three+ bouts.

The current world record stands at 250 people. So far, 240 people have signed up online (as of 4 May), with many others coming along on the day.

Josie Sensier, Group Development Coordinator at Self Help, commented: “We’re really looking forward to hosting this event and, hopefully, breaking the world record! It will provide a great day-out for the family and an opportunity to learn how to reduce stress levels”.

The event is free and open to all ages. No previous experience is needed.
