Equality Act 2010

On 1st October the new Equality Act 2010 came into force. The legislation, which was passed under the previous government, combines a number of separate pieces of legislation as well as strengthening certain aspects of equalities law.

Community Radio Fund

Community radio stations are not-for-profit stations with a social purpose, and work to involve the target community in running the service.

This Fund helps support the core costs of running a community radio station, eg:
• management;
• administration;
• financial management and reporting;
• fundraising to support the station (grants and commercial funding);
• community outreach; and
• volunteer organisation and support.

The Fund has up to £500,000 per annum to support applications and there is no limit to how much can be applied for.

Wallace & Gromit's Children's Foundation

The Wallace & Gromit's Children's Foundation raises money to improve the quality of life for children in hospitals and hospices throughout the UK.

Grants are available for projects which are not directly funded by the NHS and enrich and enhance the lives of patients in hospitals and hospices in regional centres across the country.

Applications are welcomed from registered charities in the UK and preference will be given to projects conceived by and in children's hospitals and hospices.

The Be Proud 2010 Awards - Contribution to the Community (Business) Award

The Be Proud Awards give people the opportunity to nominate unsung heroes within their community who deserve an official thank you.

There are nine award categories, including the introduction of this year’s Contribution to the Community (Business) Award, recognising companies that have introduced schemes, initiatives or policies that have made a positive impact in their communities.

Each of the categories is sponsored by a different local business, all of which are involved because of their close work with the Council in communities and neighbourhoods across the city.

PAYP Funding for Wythenshawe 2nd Round

The PAYP funding is now available for youth groups and organisations in the Wythenshawe district. The key objectives for the funding is to provide activities and sessions for young people during the weekends and the holiday periods.

The funding is to target areas of the District that has little or no provision for young people, however projects will also be considered that focus on specific groups of young people (i.e. young people with disabilities) and projects that are designed by young people for other young people.

Community Waste Fund for Recycling Projects

A new community waste fund to support recycling and reuse projects has been launched by the Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority.

Voluntary and community organisations in Greater Manchester will benefit from the £60,000 fund, which will help to set up projects to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill. The fund will encourage and empower local community groups and charities to become involved in shaping and delivering much-needed initiatives in their community, to ultimately help local people and the environment.

Funders 'ask for more solid evidence from applicants

Charitable organisations are being put through 'very thorough' due diligence before receiving funding approval

Funders are becoming more rigorous in scrutinising the evidence provided by charities in funding applications, key sector voices have warned.

This is the view of organisations canvassed by Third Sector after a speech by Alan Wyatt, director of operations at young people's charity Fairbridge.
