We Stand Together
We Stand Together
#WeStandTogether was established in the wake of the Paris attacks in 2015 and became a registered charity following the Manchester Arena attack in May 2017. The idea behind it was to highlight and tackle issues surrounding social division at all levels. The charity’s philosophy is that society is stronger when it is united. By encouraging people and communities to come together, regardless of cultural, political or religious differences, we can all benefit from living peacefully.
Our three objectives are:
1. To celebrate our differences
2. To fight hatred and intolerance
3. To build a safer and stronger country
Whilst we are committed to promoting community cohesion, we also understand that there are difficult questions to be asked and conversations to be had in order to build a better and more inclusive society.
Our core work revolves around a number of key activities, namely:
• Difficult Dialogues: bi-monthly discussions to talk about issues such as faith, gender and sexuality, sensitivity to political correctness, disability and equality
• #YouthStandTogether: an initiative with schools and youth groups to bring young people together to challenge discrimination and stereotyping through events, workshops and anti-discrimination resources
• #WeStandTogether column: a twice monthly feature in the Manchester Evening News that aims to educate readers about diversity and defy hate
• Hate crime awareness: we run events with diverse groups to oppose hate and take action in their communities
• Community conflicts: we work alongside partner organisations across Greater Manchester to respond to conflicts within different communities
• A Shared Future: having recognised #WeStandTogether’s contribution in raising awareness of social unity, we are working with Greater Manchester Mayor’s Office and Greater Manchester Combined Authority in relation to actions from its report, A Shared Future, which aims to prevent hateful extremism and promote social cohesion
• #WeStandTogether Month: held each May, in which local communities and groups can get involved in tackling hate and promoting social harmony.
