Arts Emergency is an award-winning mentoring and community support charity for young people from underrepresented backgrounds to access education, training and employment. For over a decade, we've provided inclusive, person-centred support to overlooked 16–25-year-olds seeking creative careers. Our mission is to address systemic barriers and inequality facing disadvantaged youth into creative sectors.
Arts Emergency was set up to address the social injustice of a significant lack of access to creative industries for a community of young people facing huge disadvantages. We started with just 12 mentors paired with young people in Hackney. We’ve since grown sustainably to support over 1,000 nationwide through not only mentoring but continued career support, networks and opportunities to match the needs of each person we help. We now have a huge network of 7,000 volunteers ready to help.
Every young person that joins the programme for a year of mentoring, can remain part of our Young Community until their 26th birthday. 80% of participants stay engaged for 10 years, enabling powerful and lasting connections to thrive and progress once they are employed.
In 2021 we supported over 1,000 young people aged 16-25 across the UK. Creative and cultural opportunities such as meetings with industry professionals, and work placements were shared with 223 young people last year. ‘Ruby Tickets’ helps young people access plays, concerts, festivals and more, and in 2021 we were able to provide 60 free tickets.
Our impact is in fostering positive outcomes for young people to develop their employability skills, with 90% of our community reporting that they have a greater sense of purpose, feel better prepared and more confident. We help young people progress into education or training with 85% having applied to or expressed interest in applying to university. 80% of our young people are better able to access high-quality employment opportunities.
