British Science Week Community Grants for Science Activity

6 Nov 2015 - 11:31 by michelle.foster

British Science Week (BSW) is coordinated by the British Science Association (BSA) and funded by the Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS).

BIS aims to stimulate and support scientists, engineers, science communicators and the general public to produce the largest range of self-sustaining events across the UK, in order to engage as many people as possible with science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

For BSW 2016, BIS are providing funds to distribute grants of £500 to community groups/organisations. Specifically, these grants are for community groups that work directly with audiences who are traditionally underrepresented and currently not engaged in science activity. Their definition of groups that are underrepresented in science includes:
• people who are Black Asian Minority Ethnic (BAME)
• people with low socio economic status (SES)
• young people with anti-social behaviour, including those not in education,
• employment or training (NEET)
• people with a disability, defined as a physical or mental impairment that has
• a substantial and long-term effect on someone’s ability to do normal daily
• activities (Equalities Act 2010)
• girls and women
• people living in a remote and rural location (settlements of less than 10,000
• people with a drive time of over 30 minutes to a settlement of 10,000 or more)

The grant will be used to create a STEM event or activity that will target one or more of the above groups, enabling them to engage with science and join the national celebration of science from the 11-22 March 2016.
