Cycle and Stride for Active Lives

20 Nov 2020 - 10:55 by michelle.foster

tfgmCycle and Stride for Active Lives is an exciting new project to help people and groups become more active through cycling and walking. Having the opportunity to enjoy exercise and physical activity is vital to the health and wellbeing of everyone, regardless of gender, physical ability, cultural background, age or socio-economic status.

Did you know:

  • Walking can help to improve depression, reduce anxiety and improves your mood, putting a smile on your face
  • A 20-minute bike can help towards maintaining a healthy weight and could use the same number of calories as a bar of chocolate

The aim of this project is to ensure that all communities across Greater Manchester have equal opportunities to get physically active. This can include:

  • supporting an individual to make a small change to their daily life, giving them the confidence to walk to the shops
  • or on a bigger scale such as providing bikes for a women’s group to borrow for their social rides

Greater Manchester is home to a diverse range of communities, and the team involved want to work closely with groups who know their community’s needs better than anyone.

What’s on offer?

  • Grants to help communities to get active and get moving; whether it be used for cycle parking, walk leader training or providing access to bikes
  • Cycle training to support confidence for all when riding a bike
  • Guided rides and walks offering fun, social, supported sessions in your local area
  • Fun, engaging resources to help encourage and inspire people to be more active
  • Become a local champion to help people gain confidence to try new things and help make being active fun and social; TfGM will provide support and training to those keen to help make a change within their local community

Who can apply?
The project wants to support people and groups that are keen to get more physically active. In particular they’d like to hear from women and girls, people from ethnic minorities and those who are less well-off financially. Anyone who lives in Greater Manchester can get involved.
