Moss-Side is a ward based in inner city Manchester and is proud of being a diverse area, where people from all over the world are welcome and where people contribute to making not only Moss-Side a great place to live and work but the city as a whole. 
This Seminar will look at the behavioural and structural roots of radicalisation/Islamaphobia – both religious and that on the far right as well. The presentation will also address the issue of racial profiling of communities– all of this has consequences for social cohesion and community harmony.
In order to help to understand and debate these issues Hideaway Youth Project in partnership with Manchester City Council have arranged a short presentation which brings in experts, from across the UK to debate the this topic and provide a better understanding of the impact of these issues have on its residents and the whole country.
You will:
Gain practical insight into how Far Right groups work, how racial profiling is used and develop your understanding of Islamaphobia.
Participants at the ‘Defining the Moss Side Community’ presentation will gain an understanding of:
• An overview of the growth and nature of radicalisation.
• The process of radicalisation and the targeting of vulnerable groups.
• How some people from the Moss Side community are profiled and labelled.
• How local communities, authorities and the media can help address this problem
• The importance of dialogue, integration and community conversations.

The presentation is on Wednesday 22 March 2017 at the Amani Centre in Moss-Side, Manchester M16 7DG and will run from 6pm-9.00pm.

The event is free but places are limited to 40 participants.

This presentation will be relevant for those working with communities involved in dealing with all forms of radicalisation and extremism. The general public, youth and community works, young people parents.

Nigel Bromage - In 2015 Nigel formed Small Steps Consultants to raise awareness of the dangers of Far Right extremism, using his unique personal experience of 20 years involvement within the Far Right movement. Now part of the solution and not the problem Nigel uses his in-depth knowledge to provide analysis and support to counter Far Right extremism.
Patrick Williams - Throughout his personal, academic and employment journey Patrick has developed an expertise in the research, evaluation and critique of criminal and social justice practice, policies and initiatives. More recently, his research is concerned with challenging the durability of negative constructs which serve to exclude and remove (social) opportunities for people to participate within their local communities.
Jahan Mahmood/Shaid Butt - Pioneers Leading the Way are members of the Birmingham Mentoring Consortium which was established in December 1996 by a consortium of six mentoring organisations which collectively represented a wide cohort of communities from Birmingham. Pioneers also engage in supporting various projects and initiatives all with the aim of supporting communities, residents and statutory authorities.
