Nursing students neighbourhood study

17 Sep 2019 - 16:18 by michelle.foster

University of ManchesterAll new first year student nurses (just over 300) at the University of Manchester will be studying neighbourhoods across Manchester, Stockport, Tameside and Trafford over the coming weeks. This is one of the first activities they will undertake before they ever go on a ward or work with community nurses.

The intention is for them to better understand the people they will be caring for and working with. In groups, they have five days to spend time in, and learn about, a small area and its population. As they explore the neighbourhood, they will gather information about the area and in particular the health and social assets that support the people that live there – this is not about identifying the problems, but what local people, voluntary and charity groups and health services are doing to improve lives.
