Description of opportunity:

What is a Thursday Room Guide?
Room Guides help visitors to explore the house at Lyme Park; discover the stories of the Legh family and their workers and experience the house as it was during its heyday of the Edwardian era. They also help to protect the health and safety of visitors, and play a part in safeguarding the property and its collection.

What’s in it for you?

  • Becoming part of a friendly and dedicated team
  • Meeting people from all walks of life and making new friends
  • Enjoying new experiences and learning something new every day
  • Sharing your passion for Lyme and the family stories

What’s involved?

  • Attending the daily briefing session to keep up to date with what is happening at Lyme.
  • Providing a friendly and informed welcome to all visitors.
  • Helping visitors to feel comfortable and confident finding their way around the house.
  • Bringing Lyme to life by helping visitors to experience the house as the Legh family did, for example by writing a letter, relaxing in the Library, playing in the Nursery Bedroom or taking part in Private Theatricals.
  • Being involved in developing the theme of the property and family stories.
  • Undertaking your own research into Lyme’s fascinating 600yr history.
  • Developing knowledge of the property as a whole.
  • Upholding the Trust’s preventive conservation approach: leading by example to help encourage visitors to do the same.
  • Supporting security procedures to help prevent theft and malicious damage.
  • Attending training sessions, including pre-season briefings.
  • Becoming familiar with and then following the National Trust’s Health and Safety Policy at all times, with particular regard to evacuating the house in an emergency.
  • Working as part of a large team of staff and volunteers to ensure visitors have a great day out at Lyme.

This role will suit people who… are enthusiastic, like working as part of a team, enjoy telling stories, can adapt their conversational style to be relevant to the people they are talking to, and those who are interested in history, art and architecture.
