Description of opportunity:

We run a range of youth groups for neurodivergent young people aged 13-25 across Greater Manchester (namely Tameside, Trafford, Manchester and Oldham). The groups are safe spaces for young people to build confidence, self esteem and positive friendships, in a warm and friendly environment.

Many of our young people find it difficult to take public transport due to a range of sensory and social processing difficulties, and many do not have access to alternative transport. With your kind support, you would enable isolated young people to access activities that they would otherwise miss out on.

As a Volunteer Driver, your duties will include:

  • Collecting young people from home, school, etc and bringing them to the session

  • Returning them after the session

  • Ensuring they gain safe entry to their destination

  • Helping with other related tasks when necessary (e.g. transporting equipment/materials for workshops)

You will need:

  • A full, up-to-date driving licence

  • To disclose any endorsements on your licence

  • A car with a current MOT, vehicle tax and insurance

  • To review policy documents and attend training sessions (e.g. on safeguarding and health and safety)

Essential criteria:

  • An understanding, approachable and supportive disposition

  • The ability to establish and observe boundaries with the young people

  • Patience, tolerance and flexibility

  • The ability to remain calm and focused in case of unforeseen developments or emergencies

  • Reliability and punctuality

  • An Enhanced DBS check will be mandatory; in the event of any offences on their record, applicants’ eligibility will be subject to the discretion of Starling. Starling will undergo DBS checks with successful applicants.

Desirable criteria:

  • A minimum of two years’ driving experience

  • Minor or (preferably) no endorsements on your driving licence

  • A sedan or SUV as a vehicle

Sessions take place on weekday evenings between 3.30 and 7.30pm. Drivers will be able to select their journeys based on their availability and location. Mileage and reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.
