Volunteers urged to give a few hours to help improve quality of life and health of older people

People in Greater Manchester are being urged to volunteer a few hours of their time to help reduce loneliness among older hospital patients whose family and friends are unable to visit them regularly.

The Royal Voluntary Service (RVS) is appealing for volunteers in the Rochdale, Oldham and North Manchester areas to befriend older people on hospital wards to provide companionship and ease the boredom of long spells without visitors.

Stories from Community Reporters on patient information and mental health

Macc, the ICR Social Licensee in Manchester asked its Community Reporters for their views on patient information. Eleven people’s views were collected and were fed into the Patient Information Forum project to develop a best practice tool kit.

Their stories found that people with long term conditions found it difficult to access trustworthy information. Also, people don’t feel they have enough information to feel confident discussing decisions about their own treatment with their doctor. Jake Kalisch, one of our community reporters, curated this content to produce this feature.

Fourteen Awards for organisations in Harpurhey and Moston

Fourteen is a programme funded by Spirit of 2012, a charity set up by the Big Lottery Fund to connect events to communities across the country; tackling disadvantage by supporting opportunities in sport, physical activity, culture and the arts, volunteering and social action.

Forever Manchester is managing the Fourteen programme in Manchester, where it will support the communities of Harpurhey and Moston.

Southway Community Celebration and Volunteer Fair

Last year Southway Housing Trust organised their first Volunteer Fair, which was a great success with almost fifty organisations attending to promote their volunteering opportunities. This time they want to make it even bigger and celebrate everything that is being delivered by volunteers and voluntary and community sector organisations within the Southway area.

Southway Housing Trust are sponsoring the Volunteer Involving Organisation of the Year Award at this year’s Spirit of Manchester Awards and will be making this event part of the Spirit of Manchester Festival.

Applications open for Youth Social Action Fund

Organisations working with young people can apply for funding through the Youth Social Action Fund.

Organisations working with young people in lower socioeconomic areas in England can apply for funding through the new Youth Social Action Fund.

The Fund received £1 million from the Cabinet Office, as part of the government’s pledge to support Step Up To Serve’s #iwill campaign. The #iwill campaign aims to increase participation in youth social action (volunteering, fundraising and campaigning) by 50% by 2020.

Exciting new opportunity for budding young activists

Southern Voices World War One project wins Heritage Lottery Fund support

Southern Voices (Manchester) has received £60,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for an exciting project, ‘Out of the Shadows: 1914-18 Perspectives of Colonised People’ based in Manchester.

The project will explore the role and experiences of the colonised peoples of the British West Indies, Nigeria, India, German and British East Africa during the First World War.
