Almanac data shows charities subdued by financial climate

9 May 2013 - 11:54 by michelle.foster

New data released from NCVO’s UK Civil Society Almanac 2013 shows the powerful effect that high inflation had on charity sector finances in recent years. NCVO's UK Civil Society Almanac 2013 examines charities' accounts for financial year 2010/11.

In cash terms, the charity sector generated an extra £2bn in income in 2010/11 compared to the previous year, with a total income of £38.3bn. But rising costs – inflation was at 5% – wiped out the effect of this increase and meant that the sector’s real-terms income was almost identical to its level in 2009/10.

Eyes Wide Open – A new project that challenges prejudice

26 Mar 2013 - 12:00 by michelle.foster

The staff and students of Manchester Communication Academy have joined together with community members of Harpurhey and surrounding areas to develop a new project that challenges prejudice.

The project is called ‘Eyes Wide Open’, and in its first documentary film it embarks on a process of protecting the communities of North Manchester. It does this by inviting those who label the area and its residents as deprived and disadvantaged, to open their eyes and to take a closer look.

In the words of Laure Junot – ‘Prejudice squints when it looks, and lies when it talks.’
