In view of recent developments in relation to COVID-19 the 42nd Street team have reflected on how to respond in order to keep young people’s needs at the centre of all they do and as a key service in Greater Manchester, whilst balancing their responsibilities to adhere to government advice around social distancing.
Martin Lewis is releasing £1,000,000 from my personal charity fund to provide grants of £5,000 to £20,000 to small registered charities, or local arms of bigger charities, across the UK – to help with specific UK coronavirus-related poverty relief projects.
Examples could include foodbanks, charities engaged in community aid, financial advice help and more. The hope is to get the money distributed within the next couple of weeks, and Martin Lewis is looking for projects that are up and running, or are in the process of being set up – to help to deliver help at speed.
The National Emergencies Trust (NET) has launched a coronavirus fundraising appeal to raise funds for local charities. The British Red Cross will be managing donations. NET will award grants and distribute money raised through a number of charitable organisations, for example local community foundations.
In response to the situation around COVID-19, AFM will be moving to weekly eBulletins to provide information, guidance and advice for older people and those who work with and support older people in Manchester. AFM hope to keep you up to date with what steps are being taken by the city, and the support being offered by local groups and communities.
Healthy Me Healthy Communities are raising £1,000 to purchase food and essential items to distribute to vulnerable people without support networks who are self-isolating. Following the recent COVID-19 government advice, they have taken the difficult decision to close their Community Grocers.
ACORN is currently pushing for the government to protect renters against the economic impact that the outbreak may have on them. The petition calls on the Government to enact temporary rent freezes for renters suffering with the virus or self isolating for the period of their self isolation and recovery. The measures brought in on 18 March banning any applications for new evictions in the next 3 months still compel renters to repay any rent payments they can't afford at this time through a future payment plan.
Stop Hate UK has recently received an increasing number of calls, across our helpline areas, from people experiencing racism, discrimination and verbal abuse, arising from perceptions that they are members of the Chinese community and therefore likely to be carriers of the coronavirus.
As a result of COVID-19, Invisible (Manchester) are suspending their tours and training. The silver-lining is that during this quiet period they can finally turn their attention to all the long neglected tasks that have fallen far down the to do list!

TLC the mental health charity based in Ardwick have currently closed all Drop-in sessions until further notice. TLC have taken this action following Government and Health advice regarding Covid 19. TLC are operating a telephone service for current clients were they are telephoning them on a weekly basis to offer support.
